How to Practise Nasya Therapy?
To cure and treat nasal and respiratory diseases, practise Nasya Therapy on an empty stomach (usually an hour before or after a shower or workout). Lie down with your head tilted back and put approximately 5 drops of Nasya in each nostril. Next, sniff deeply and keep lying for about a minute, which allows the nasya to thoroughly penetrate and bring effective results.
The following conditions must be considered when using Nasya treatment as effective health care:
-
Pregnancy (especially in the first trimester)
-
Menstruation
-
Flu or fever
-
Nasal abnormalities or injury
-
Nasal surgeries
-
Any particular bleeding disorders
Pratimarsha Nasya can be performed on a daily basis as part of preventive care using oils such as Anu Taila, Shadbindu Taila, Ksheerabala Taila, or pure sesame oil.

FAQs
How often should Nasya be performed?
Nasya can be performed on a daily basis using a few drops of oil in each nostril (about 2-4 drops). Therapeutic Nasya (Shodhana or Brihmana Nasya) should be done only under an Ayurvedic practitioner’s guidance, which is usually as a short course rather than daily practice.
Are there any side effects of Nasya?
While Nasya treatment is safe and effective, it might cause throat infection, nausea and mental load if not performed correctly.
Do I need post-treatment care after Nasya?
Yes. Post-nasya care, also known as Paschat Karma, is a necessary part of the process. The practice includes gentle gargling and avoiding cold air, heavy meals, or strenuous activity.
What are the different types of Nasya?
There are multiple types of Nasya treatment, which are as follows:
-
Pratimarsha Nasya – daily, preventive care
-
Shodhana Nasya – cleansing and detoxifying
-
Brihmana Nasya – nourishing and strengthening
-
Shamana Nasya – pacifying doshic imbalances
-
Navana Nasya – medicated oil-based therapy
What type of oils should be used to practise Nasya treatment?
Usually, it is recommended to use oils such as Anu Taila, Shadbindu Taila, Ksheerabala Taila, or pure sesame oil for daily Pratimarsha Nasya. However, one should consult a professional practitioner before practising the technique.
